As a scientist I reveled in anticipation. But it wasn't until retirement that I learned that there is more. Much more. Too soon old. Too late smart.

Your comment “too soon old, too late smart “ which I recall was the title of that spectacular book by your departed friend Gordon Livingston, reminds me of two Latin phrase phrases:

“Sic transit gloria mundi,” which I saw inscribed on a gravestone in Portsmouth NH

and

“Tempus fugit,” which I first saw in an issue of Mad Magazine where it was the caption below a cartoon of a man getting hit in the head with an alarm clock with wings.
